And Starring: Pie

Oh my god! How did I not know about this? Pushing Daisies, which has been recommended to me but which I haven't managed to watch (my TV watching has waned...my brain only has room for crime procedurals or Tina Fey, it seems) features PIE. The show is about - wait for it - a pie baker/shop owner who can bring people back from the dead. And some other quirky things. Point is, what, a show about pie? And I only find out about it as it's getting canceled? Damn. Oh well. At least I can try one of its recipes. The pie-making, dead-raising protagonist brings back his childhood crush, who proceeds to bake a delicious sounding Pear-Gruyere pie, featured here. Yum. I'm going to try it. Apparently, on the show, she makes it for her anxious aunts and includes crushed up anti-depressants, in hopes said aunts will medicate unknowingly. I gotta say, with my fair share of nutty relatives, I can understand the impulse.

This got me thinking about all the pie featured in TV and film. I could find recipes all over. There's that little movie, The Waitress -- oh, and that gross-out series of movies I never saw. You know, the ones with pie in the title. I'll try and come up with more...

1. Today I defend my thesis. I'm excited and nervous, both. I'm trying to breathe deeply and resist the urge to overcaffeinate. 2. The most popular, most searched-out, most read post on this blog is my recipe for Raspberry Crumble Pie. Well, Ken Haedrich's recipe, which I faithfully transcribed. Second most read? Red huckleberry pie. Note to self: the unusual recipes make me stand out. Do I want to stand out? I don't know. Made For Each Other: Strawberry Rhubarb

This is a summertime classic, warm and gooey, with sour rhubarb to offset the sweet-but-predictable strawberry. It's a family favorite and definitely one of my pie staples. Plain old strawberry pie verges on saccharine, so you need the rhubarb to kick it up. You know how it is. The best couples usually have a sweet/sour factor going for them - good cop/bad cop, social butterfly/nerd, dreamer/breadwinner, Obama/Biden. Rhubarb is grown in huge quantities in the Northwest but it's hard to find in Texas. In fact, I bought a bunch at the grocery store here and the chec ker asked, "what is this? Is it some kind of red celery?" Gasp, no. It is heavenly. For this pie, I like to go fifty-fifty on the rhubarb to berry ratio, and I slice the strawberries only in half, so you get nice fat bites of them. One caveat: cook and sweeten the rhubarb before filling and baking . It's kind of a tough customer, though nothing a little heat and sugar can't fix. Strawberry-Rhu

It's Hard to Blog About Pie...

When I am not making any pie. I did make some delicious cherry cornmeal scones, but I can't write about that, it's treason. So maybe I'll just write about my life and try to figure out a clever pie-related lens through which to view it. If you can't tell from that last sentence, I'm pretty immersed in academia. Scrolling around online reading interviews with writers about who can tell whose stories, about "post-gay fiction," about identity politics. Love this stuff. Makes me feel like there's so much more to learn. I'm also writing comments on my fiction students' exercises (oh, man...) and working on a review about a Salvadorean novel for the VQR Young Reviewer's Contest. Is any of this about baking yet? Don't worry. I'm getting there. It's been a big week, with turning in the first draft of my novel, and the reading I got to do at a lovely wonderful hipster/dive bar .
